Ray McMartin founded the company Sydney Automotive Paints in May 1979 after the company he was sales representing for (Sydney Glass) had just been sold to an American glass company and they didn't want the Automotive section Ray had built up, so they went separate ways and Ray McMartin started Sydney Automotive Paints and Equipment (SAPE).

Sydney Automotive Paints was a great success and with Ray's enthusiasm and some dedicated staff, the company grew at an out standing rate and the industry took off as Two Pack paint became a quick and affordable option to painting just about anything. Dulux and Acran paints were sold by SAPE for the first 5 years.

Ray soon found that his company needed more products to sell and he started looking for different agencies that were not so common in Australia . It was around 1985 when Ray and Glasurit became business partners, Glasurit fitted perfectly into the new approach of selling goods that were different but would save time and money, SEM custom paints soon followed, Auto Robot straightening equipment, Dynatron/Bondo, USC, Car System, Cam branded products, all made their way to the Australian market through Sydney Automotive Paints.

It was time to expand even further and in July 1988 Ray purchase a small but profitable company called Automotive Colour and Equipment that was the Dynatron importer for Australia and had a Spies Hecker distributorship.
Now that NSW was covered, Ray decided to take his knowledge to Queensland and in January 1996 purchased Prestige Paints and Equipment that had a Glasurit distributorship for Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Melbourne was the last state for Ray to set up a branch and that branch was opened in September 2005. The Melbourne branch is only for our Equipment division to work out of and have trade days.

Agencies were set up in Western Australia , South Australia and Queensland for Automotive Colour and Equipment to have representation at these states.
With three 3 main companies and a great deal of loyal Distributors, our group of companies covers every part of Australia .
